"Quickies - Vol. 141"
Bob Herbert, NYTimes..................
"We're like a compulsive gambler plunging ever more deeply into debt in order to wager on a rigged game. There is no victory to be had in Afghanistan, only grief. We're spending endless billions on this wretched war but can't extend the unemployment benefits of Americans suffering from the wretched economy here at home. The difference between this and a nightmare is that when you wake up from a nightmare it's over. This is all too tragically real."

"It's almost as if the financial markets understand what policy makers seemingly don't ; that while long-term fiscal responsibility is important, slashing spending in the mist of a depression, which deepens that depression and paves the way for deflation, is actually self-defeating. And who will pay the price for this triumph of orthodoxy? The answer is, tens of millions of unemployed workers, many of whom will go jobless for years, and some of whom will never work again."
Editor's note : We need to get folks back to work, asap!
