"Quickies - Vol. 98"

            Thank You!!...............

I wish to thank President Bush for campaigning for the Republicans. George, you did a heck of a job. [:-)

            Writer, Andrea Batista Schlesinger........

"Some Americans enlist to open economic doors that, under Bush are swinging shut. So here's my inconvient truth : Americans didn't vote on just the war or just the economy, but on both. They voted against the policies that leave them reading the obituaries of thousands of young people who died somewhere else trying to make a better life here."

            NYTimes.................

"At this point it is hard to tell who is more out of touch : President Bush, who continues to insist that Iraq has not descended into Civil War, or Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki, who appears to believe that Americans will prop him up indefinitely." Editor's note : No Civil War in Iraq & Michael Richards [Kramer] just received the MLK Brotherhood Award.

              Jimmy Carter..........

New book : "Palestine Peace Not Apartheid." "The bottom line is this : Peace will come to Israel and the Middle East only when the Israeli government is willing to comply with international law, with the Roadmap for Peace, with official American policy, with the wishes of a majority of its own citizens - and honor its own previous commitments - by accepting its legal borders. All Arab neighbors must pledge to honor Israel's right to live in peace under these conditions." - Jimmy Carter.

             Lou Dobbs.............

New book : "War On The Middle Class." "The exploitation of illegal workers must end. Any employer, whether an individual or a corporation, who does not pay workers at least minimum wage should be subjected to additional fines. And this would be a good time to raise the minimum wage to a living wage and to establish heavy penalties for those who violate that standard." Editor's note : I support the McCain - Kennedy Bill. [:-)

Have we no sense of decency?.............

If fishing around the world continues at its present pace, more species will vanish, marine ecosystems will unravel and there will be "global collapse" of all species currently fished. Source : NYTimes. Editor's note : Iceland killing whales. Japan killing dolphins. [:-{

            A poem by Kurt Vonnegut........Requiem

The crucified planet Earth,
should it find a voice
and a sense of irony,
might now well say
o our abuse of it,
"Forgive them, Father, They know not what they do."
The irony would be
that we know what
we are doing.
When the last living thing
has died on account of us,
how poetical it would be
if Earth could say,
in a voice floating up
perhaps
from the floor of the Grand Canyon,
"it is done."

The U.S. ranks first among industrialized countries in nuclear weapons capabilities and expenditures but ranks last in providing health insurance for all children. [:-(

The right to speak my mind out..............

Upon receiving some anonymous hate mail, as a result of expressing my personal opinion with regard to our present-day disturbing political atmosphere, I became very upset. Knowing that each one of us has the ability to pollute the atmosphere in which we live, my first thought was how to respond. I could curl up into a ball and lick my wounds - or, I could try to make the environment around me better. My faith taught me to harden not my heart, therefore, in order to cleanse this wound of hate, I choose to respond in the following manner. Don t try to silence my voice merely because you disagree with me! Hiding behind a cloak of anonymity only confirms your unwillingness to sustain your own opinion. In trying to paint a psychological portrait of me based on my opinion, you were certain that I am a die-hard Democrat, a Liberal. But, you are wrong. And, to deny my right to freedom of thought and expression, constitutionally protected in America, should never be an option. Just color me Idealist, of independent thinking. But, personally, I dislike labels intensely, and would rather be called an American, who treasures our Constitution as more than a piece of paper. As an American living in the world s oldest democracy, I believe every citizen in this country is entitled to his or her opinion. We still have the right to speak our minds. It certainly would have been more mature to disagree with my opinion in an intellectual manner, instead of resorting to feckless insults, vitriol, and defamatory sentiments! I would expect some respect for my right to free expression, as I respect yours. I don t wish to debate with anyone. I merely took advantage of an opportunity to use my freedom as an American to think and express my opinion. If disagreed with, then I would hope a response would not resort to pusillanimous remarks. Frankly, I wonder how much is really known about our Constitution. The First Amendment serves the needs of the human spirit - a spirit that demands self-expression. It gives us the right to speak our mind, just because we have a mind. Freedom of thought, conscience, and expression are values linked to our characteristics as human beings, and these values give the individual a right to be an active player in our democracy, and not a passive spectator. In our democracy, sovereignty always rests with the people who never surrender their right to protest. Therefore, free speech is a means of people power. It s quite disappointing and a downright shame that some people lack even a modicum of civility, where they have to resort to berating another person because of an ideological division. Hate menaces! Intellectual prowess benefits! Truth will not be extinguished, for truth will always emerge. I am reminded that Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights recently celebrated, is the story of standing up for what you believe in. It reminds us not to remain silent in the face of oppression, and not to surrender our rights. Christmas, likewise, was a time of special meaning - a time to ponder the Love sent from above, and to be lifted once more in a glorious light with the spirit of Peace on Earth and Good Will to All. It was my hope that Christmastime also reminded us to keep alive the flame of tolerance, civility and love. ELEANOR SYDLO
